Jack's early involvement with football was as a schoolboy playing for the Wolverhampton Town side. He started refereeing at the age of 17 and continued for the next 33 years. Jack was on the football league list for 25 years and FIFA international list of referees for 17 years. On retirement this totalled over 1000 matches, with 100 being international appointments in over 60 countries.
In 1966 Jack refereed the FA cup final, Sheffield Wednesday vs Everton, and in the same year was nominated for the panel of referees for the World cup in England. Subsequently he was nominated in 1970 and 1974 for the World cup finals in Mexico and Germany respectively. His nomination in 1974, culminating in his being appointed to referee, the memorable final between West Germany and Holland.
On retirement from the FIFA list Jack was awarded the FIFA Meritorious service award. During his time on FIFA he refereed most of the major finals including the European cup final, and the South American, Chinese, South African and Russian Cup finals.
In 1977 he received the Meritorious Service award from the P.F.A. Only the members of the professional Footballers Association, the players, can vote for the award. The presentation of the Meritorious Service Award to Jack by the P.F.A, is the only occasion when the award has been presented to a referee.
In 1999 Jack Taylor was inducted into the FIFA hall of fame.
Jack is now employed by the Football League, his main role is working with their major sponsors. The Nationwide Building Society, organising presentations for Sky TV. In addition to his work with the sponsors Jack is also a member of the Football League Referees committee.
In his spare time Jack is a steward for the Jockey club standing at Wolverhampton Racecourse, and is also an NGRC Steward. The NGRC is the National Governing body concerning all disciplinary decisions within Greyhound Racing.
Jack served as a magistrate in Wolverhampton for 23 years and was for some time chairman of the Gaming and betting committee.
